Obituary for Welton Baker

Welton  Baker
Welton Baker, 79, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Monday, October 9, 2017 at Meritus Medical Center. Welton was born in 1938 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas to the late Lorenzo and Valerie Baker. He earned a Bachelor's degree at Texas College and a Masters degree at Morgan State College (Baltimore). After college Mr Baker server 2 years in the US Army stationed at Ft Ritchie, MD and 2 years in the Army Reserve.

While residing in Hagerstown, Mr. Baker taught Science and Math at E. Russell Hicks School for 31 years, He also taught classes at Washington County Detention Center, helping inmates earn their GED and many other community organizations. Welton returned to the area 3 years ago after living 23 years in Mt. Pleasant, TX. He was a prior 25 year member of Zion Baptist Church, and at that time served as a member and chairman of the Trustee Board . He was a Master Mason, and a current 23 year member of the Piney Church in Mt Pleasant Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Kay (Brooks) Baker, his children, Sandra “Cookie” and her husband, Mark from Macomb, MI, Gregory and his wife, Tovah from Washington, DC, Winfred and his wife, Gloria from Hagerstown Md,, Tony Jones from Texarkana Tx, and Candace and her husband, James from St Augustine, FL, his grandchildren, Daryl, Shanell, Stephanie, Sharron, Cheree, and Tony. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, and Dr. Howard Hawkins, and his wife Sue who was raised with him as a brother .

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at New Hope Praise Ministry, 1015 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown at 1:00 pm. Apostle Haru Carter, Jr. will preside.
Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 12:30 to 1:00 pm prior to the service.
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
