Melvin Eugene "Gene" Watts
Melvin Eugene (Gene) Watts, 85, of Waynesboro, PA died on Monday, December 18, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. He was in failing health for a few years and critically ill for the past two weeks.
He was born on September 18, 1932 in Waynesboro, PA; he was the son of the late William F. and Nettie (Brown) Watts.
Mr. Watts was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area, attended Waynesboro Area Schools and served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in June 1961. Mr. Watts was employed by the A and P Grocery store, later renamed Super Fresh, where he retired after 38 years. He attended St. Paul AME Church in Waynesboro. Mr. Watts was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, cooking, and shooting the breeze at the old Sheetz and Rutters.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda E. Watts, of Waynesboro, PA, a daughter, Cheryl D. Watts of Waynesboro,PA, four grandchildren, Nichelle B. Watts and Taylor E. Watts of Waynesboro, PA, Cory A. Young of East Stroudsburg, PA and John D. Wagaman, as well as a niece and nephew; Crystal Springs and Chris Springs of Lakeland, FL, and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Grimaldo and Blanche L. Washington, two brothers John Watts and Charles Brown, one daughter Dedra R. Watts, and two sons, William E. Watts and John Stoner.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 30 West King Street, Waynesboro, PA on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Gwendolyn Bell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Inurnment to immediately follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, PA.
