Obituary for Charles Raymond Messmer

Charles (Charlie) Raymond Messmer, 62, of Hagerstown, MD passed away January 8, 2019 at his home. Charlie was born August 16, 1956 in Cumberland, MD to the late Ray and Wilda Messmer. He graduated from SHHS in 1974 and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland - Baltimore Campus in 1985. He developed and was the director of the Washington County Jail Substance Abuse Program in Hagerstown for many years. The program was used as a model alternative for drug and alcohol offenders throughout the United States court systems. A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Harman Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Come and share your memories of Charlie. Interment will immediately follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. More information available at www.harmanfunerals.com

It sometimes happens that two friends will meet,
And, with a smile and touch of hands, again go on their way along the noisy street. Each is so sure of all the friendship sweet, The loving silence gives no thought of pain.

And so I think those friends whom we call dead are with us. It may be some quiet hour, or time of busy work for hand or head-Their love fills all the heart that missed them so. They bring a sweet assurance of the life serene, above the worry that we know; and we grow braver for the comfort brought. Why should we mourn because they do not speak our words that lie so far below their thought?
